Scientists have made a significant discovery in identifying a major cause of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which could be addressed with currently available medications.
This development has been heralded as a “massive step forwards” by the research team.
IBD, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is increasingly common. In 2022, it was estimated that over half a million people in the UK suffered from IBD, nearly double the previously thought figure of 300,000.

She expressed excitement and hope upon learning about the research and its potential impact on those affected by IBD.
‘We’ve found a critical pathway’
James Lee from the Francis Crick Institute and consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Free Hospital and UCL announced that, starting from a genetic angle, they’ve identified a pathway that plays a considerable role in IBD and other inflammatory conditions.
Lee highlights that they have proven the potential of targeting this pathway therapeutically and are now focused on enhancing the safety and efficacy for future treatments.
Christina Stankey, PhD student and co-first author, emphasized the complexity of IBD and other autoimmune conditions, acknowledging the importance of discovering a central pathway and the possibility of deactivating it with an existing drug.
The research findings have been published in the journal Nature.
