A variety of studies have indicated a correlation between these two factors. However, due to their limited participant numbers, these findings were not conclusive.
A larger-scale study conducted by researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and published in February examined data from 20,880 people over seven months. The data showed that higher body temperatures were common among people with depression.
The breadth of this study is impressive, encompassing participants from 106 different countries. Yet, the research does not definitively establish whether increased body temperature is a cause or a consequence of depression. It does, however, point to a noteworthy relationship worthy of further study.
“To our knowledge, this is the largest study to date to examine the association between body temperature – assessed using both self-report methods and wearable sensors – and depressive symptoms in a geographically broad sample,” commented UCSF psychiatrist Ashley Mason about the study’s findings.
Several factors could explain this connection. Perhaps depression-related metabolic processes lead to excessive heat production, or maybe depression interferes with the body’s cooling mechanisms.
Another theory is that some external factors, such as mental stress or inflammation, may simultaneously produce elevated body temperature and depressive symptoms.
Further research is needed to elucidate these relationships. Depression is a multifaceted disorder, with a variety of possible triggers, and body temperature may be one of the contributing factors.
Some initial research indicates that hot tubs and saunas could potentially alleviate depression symptoms. These treatments might trigger self-cooling via sweating, which could also have psychological benefits.
“Ironically, heating people up might result in a prolonged reduction in body temperature beyond what direct cooling methods, such as ice baths, can achieve,” Mason explained.
Mason raises the question, “What if we can track the body temperature of people with depression to time heat-based treatments adequately?”
According to the study, the severity of self-reported depression symptoms was related to higher body temperature averages. There was also a minor correlation with lower daily temperature fluctuations, although these findings were not statistically significant.
With an estimated 5 percent of the population worldwide affected by depression, the search for effective treatments is of paramount importance. Every new piece of research adds more clarity in addressing this challenge.
“Given the rising incidence of depression in the United States, the prospect of a novel treatment avenue is promising,” Mason said.
