A breakthrough in prostate cancer surgery comes with the development of a novel fluorescent dye, according to researchers at the University of Oxford.
This dye specifically targets prostate cancer cells, lighting up under a special illumination during surgical procedures.
Such innovation allows surgeons to identify and remove a greater amount of cancerous tissue at the time of operation, thereby diminishing the likelihood of cancer recurrence.
While currently focused on prostate cancer, it’s anticipated that the dye technology could be extended to assist in the treatment of other cancer types.
Professor Freddie Hamdy from the University of Oxford, the study’s chief investigator, elaborated, “With this approach, we can eliminate not just the primary tumor, but also any cancer cells that have started to migrate, which might otherwise lead to relapse.”
“It further enables us to conserve as much of the uninvolved neighboring tissue as possible, which is vital for reducing severe side-effects that can affect patients’ quality of life like incontinence and impotence.”
Endorsed by Cancer Research UK, comprehensive clinical trials are in progress to ascertain if surgeries incorporating this marker dye are more effective at extracting prostate cancer and preserving healthy tissue than the current surgical methods.
In a precursor trial involving 23 prostate cancer patients, each individual was administered the dye before their prostate removal surgery.
With the aid of fluorescence, the dye revealed not only the tumor but also its extension into surrounding areas, including the lymph nodes.
A specialized imaging setup then illuminated the prostate and adjacent zones, causing the cancerous cells to become fluorescent.

David Butler, a participant aged 77, joined the study when his prostate cancer showed signs of metastasis.
“Upon early retirement, I looked forward to enjoying my hobbies like gardening, bowling, and walking,” he commented.
“My participation in the Promote study has hopefully granted me many additional years of those joys.”
Butler now reports being cancer-free.
The study received funding from Cancer Research UK and was conducted with support from Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, the Department of Oncology, and the National Institute for Health and Care Research biomedical research centre.
The results of this groundbreaking research have been published in the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.
