The first individual in England has received a pioneering artificial cornea transplant, and the procedure is already deemed a success.

At the age of 91, Cecil ‘John’ Farley has experienced a notable improvement in vision after living with deteriorating eyesight for 15 years.

The NHS defines the cornea as the clear, front surface of the eye, serving as the “window to the eye.” When the cornea is damaged from injury or disease, it can lead to visual impairment and pain, causing long waits for those in need of a transplant from a human donor.

The innovative artificial EndoArt cornea offers hope for reducing waiting times, lessening the burden on the NHS, and avoiding the risks of organ rejection.

Mr. Farley, a resident of Chobham in Surrey, expressed his happiness with the operation on his right eye, emphasizing the importance of his sight to continue seeing his wife, Elizabeth, after 63 years of marriage.

“It makes your life fuller when your eyes work properly – you don’t realize how debilitating it is until it happens to you,” he adds.

Before the surgical intervention in February, Mr. Farley’s right eye vision was non-existent. Post-procedure, he reports a gradual recovery of sight, stating that brighter light aids his vision and that it might take up to a full year for full recovery.

The EndoArt cornea, likened to a contact lens, is attached to the eye with one stitch and positioned using a gas bubble.

Patients Poised to Experience Significant Benefits

The use of artificial corneas is a major step forward due to the vastly decreased waiting times for surgery. This means that patients, who otherwise face deteriorating vision while on the elective backlog, can receive the procedure months in advance over awaiting a donor transplant.

Currently, the surgery is limited to patients with “complex eye” issues, such as those with a failed human cornea transplant.

Tom Poole, the consultant ophthalmologist who performed the operation, is hopeful that this technique could be expanded to “virgin eye” patients – those without a history of eye surgeries – in the future.

Poole and his peer, Hanbin Lee at the Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, have completed three more surgeries since February and are optimistic about its broader applications.

The latest tests indicate that Mr. Farley’s surgery has been a success, and three additional patients are lined up for the procedure.

Worldwide, only 200 individuals, Mr. Farley included, have received EndoArt corneas, and it’s hoped the rollout will continue to expand.

Organic cornea donations, typically sourced from deceased donors, reached 4,719 within the NHS in the year 2022/23, as per recent records.

Consultant ophthalmologist Thomas Poole from the Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust in Surrey, who accomplished the procedure, labels the artificial cornea a “great advancement.”

Poole noted prior concerns about Mr. Farley’s situation potentially being his “last hope” after a prior transplant failed.

Mr. Farley’s desire for the post-surgery future includes engaging in practical activities like watch repair, but for now, he is content with simpler tasks.

FAQs about Artificial Cornea Transplants

What is an artificial cornea transplant?

An artificial cornea transplant involves replacing a damaged or diseased cornea with an artificial one, such as the EndoArt cornea, to restore vision.

Who is eligible for an artificial cornea transplant?

Currently, the surgery is mostly reserved for patients who meet the “complex eye” criteria, which often include those who have had a failed human cornea transplant. However, there is potential for expansion to other patients in the future.

Why are artificial corneas important?

Artificial corneas can significantly shorten waiting times for transplants, relieve pressures on healthcare systems, and eliminate the possibility of organ rejection. Additionally, they can be more easily produced and scaled for broad distribution.

How successful are artificial cornea transplants?

The initial success rate for artificial cornea transplants, such as the one experienced by Mr. Farley, is encouraging. Continuous monitoring and additional studies are required to better understand long-term outcomes.

Could artificial corneas replace human donor corneas entirely?

In the future, artificial corneas might become the norm, especially as the technology and procedure continue to improve and become suitable for a wider variety of patients.
