Researchers have brought to life the image of a marine reptile from 240 million years ago, evoking imagery of a “Chinese dragon,” as it has been fully reconstructed for the first time.
The creature named Dinocephalosaurus orientalis was discovered in China’s Guizhou province back in 2003.
With more complete fossils found since then, scientists have now managed to depict the creature in its entirety.
The ancient reptile which roamed the seas of the Triassic period had an astonishing neck comprising 32 vertebrae and limbs adapted for swimming.
A fish-laden stomach area indicates that the Dinocephalosaurus was well suited to life in the sea.
Nick Fraser from National Museums Scotland was a part of the team studying the specimen. He commented, “This discovery provides us with a complete view of this intriguing long-necked creature for the first time.
“Such discoveries continue to challenge our understanding of the Triassic period’s diverse marine life. With the strikingly serpentine form, echoing the mythical Chinese dragons, it is sure to fascinate people worldwide.”
A resemblance is drawn between the Dinocephalosaurus’ elongated neck and that of the Tanystropheus hydroides, another Triassic sea reptile. They shared many traits, including their size and certain skull features, but the Dinocephalosaurus sported far more vertebrae in both the neck and torso, hinting at a more snake-like appearance.

The research on the Dinocephalosaurus orientalis involved scientists from Scotland, Germany, the United States, and China and was conducted over a span of a decade at Beijing’s Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Dinocephalosaurus, despite its semblance to the well-known plesiosaurs which appeared later and are often associated with the Loch Ness monster, was not closely related to these creatures.
Professor Li Chun from the research institute noted the impressive nature of the find within the Triassic history of Guizhou province.
