Seismic sensors were activated due to Taylor Swift fans dancing with such vigor at the artist’s recent concerts in Scotland, reveals the British Geological Survey (BGS).
Seismometers picked up the movements up to six kilometres away from Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh, where Swift performed last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The most significant tremors corresponded with her most popular songs, occurring nightly.
“It was simply a magical and splendid night,” shared Lindsay Hempenstall, a concertgoer on Friday.
“Imagine being engulfed in love and joy, belting out the lyrics with over 70,000 people, alongside my nine-year-old—remarkable.”
The Friday concert is suspected to be the biggest single event in Scottish history, and Swift herself called it the “wildest welcome to your city.”

During those peaks, the energy output from the attendees dancing and stomping was equivalent to charging 6,000 car batteries or about 80 kilowatts, BGS revealed.
BGS seismologist Callum Harrison mentioned, “Scotland’s reputation for delivering some of the most passionate audiences is still very much intact!”
Songs like Cruel Summer, Champagne Problems, and Shake It Off also caused considerable seismic activity during the performances. Bethan Bryan, who attended Saturday’s show, chose Shake It Off as her highlight of the evening.
“It was fabulously loud!” she exclaimed. “Having 73,000 people sing together for three and a half hours—everyone was so cheerful.”
She added, “[My daughter] and I chimed in from our window on Friday night. We live approximately 1.5 miles away, yet Taylor’s voice was crystal clear!”
Friday’s concert, though by only a slight edge, turned out to be the most vigorous, generating seismic movements of 23.4nm.
Global icons like Beyonce, Harry Styles, and Bruce Springsteen also performed at Edinburgh earlier this May 2023, their shows registered on earthquake sensors, but fell short of the Swifties’ enthusiasm by nearly 10 nanometres.
“The chance to measure such a distinct kind of seismic activity has indeed been exciting,” Mr Harrison remarked.

Though the BGS’s instruments detected the concerts, it’s likely that only those in the immediate vicinity could feel the vibrations, BGS states.
