Despite clear statements on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website affirming that vaccines do not cause autism, an alarming 24 percent of U.S. adults mistakenly believe that the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine can cause this condition, with an additional 3 percent uncertain about the link.
This information stems from a survey of 1,522 individuals conducted by the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) of the University of Pennsylvania. Published in April, these statistics raise concerns that misconceptions may lead to lower vaccination rates and increased vulnerability to preventable diseases.
It has been more than two decades since the former doctor Andrew Wakefield published a discredited study falsely associating autism with the MMR vaccine. Despite the retraction of this study, misinformation from the resulting debates appears to persist, according to the APPC researchers.
“The unshakable false belief that the MMR vaccine is linked to autism continues to create problems, particularly in the face of rising measles cases,” remarks Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center.
The spread of misinformation around COVID-19 vaccines has further compounded these issues.
Extensive research has shown that vaccines, including their ingredients, do not cause autism. Furthermore, vaccinations have saved countless lives by reducing or eliminating diseases like smallpox, polio, diphtheria, and mumps, and until recently, measles was also nearly eradicated. Measles is far from a benign ailment; it can lead to severe outcomes, including blindness, brain damage, and even death.
“Our research on vaccination consistently reveals that the belief in an autism-MMR vaccine link is not only connected to hesitancy toward the measles vaccine but also to a broader reluctance towards vaccines,” adds Jamieson.
While 60 percent of survey participants understood that measles can be transmitted via coughing, sneezing, or contaminated surfaces, over half were uncertain about the measles incubation period, which can extend to four days before the appearance of a rash.
The only instance when the MMR vaccine is not recommended is for pregnant women due to the weak live virus used in the vaccine, which could theoretically pose a risk to the fetus. However, women who receive the vaccine at least a month before pregnancy pose no threat to their unborn child.
In the US and globally, measles cases are increasing, mainly among unvaccinated children or those with uncertain vaccination statuses. The U.S. has reported 146 measles cases in 2024 by the end of May, in comparison to 58 cases throughout 2023.
