For nearly two decades, WWE enjoyed unrivaled dominance in the professional wrestling industry until Tony Khan launched All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2019, offering a fresh alternative to the wrestling community.
AEW has been instrumental in shaking up the wrestling scene by delivering impressive events and securing world-class wrestling talent such as Mercedes Mone, Will Ospreay, and Chris Jericho. Wrestlers now have a new platform where they can showcase their skills and build a fanbase.
WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker, during a Q&A session on his Patreon, acknowledged the advantages of competition in the wrestling industry but expressed reservations about Tony Khan’s suitability as the person to challenge WWE’s supremacy. He suggested that AEW has the potential to be a formidable adversary for WWE provided they streamline their business operations.
“I agree with you. I don’t think there is a real true leader in the locker room. And I don’t, I am not sure…I have nothing against the man you know but I don’t know that Tony is the guy to run the company. I mean his heart’s in a good place and he wants to do something but I just don’t know he has the Ackerman to run a wrestling company against the juggernaut that is the WWE. But hey, I could be wrong. There was that one other time I was wrong. But I hope they get it together and we do have some [competition]. It’s better for the wrestlers, it’s better for the audience. It’s better for the fans. It’s better for everything.”
Staying abreast with the rapid transformation of wrestling, Tony Khan has weighed in on WWE’s recent partnership with TNA. He has also fostered a relationship with TNA, allowing certain crossover appearances.
Looking ahead, Khan has his hands full with orchestrating the multi-promotion spectacle Forbidden, which is in collaboration with NJPW among others. The event has been marketed heavily and ticket sales have been robust. It remains to be seen whether Tony Khan can dispel The Undertaker’s skepticism and secure his status as a pivotal figure in the wrestling world.
