The notorious serial killer Eom In Sook, who shocked South Korea in 2005 when her horrific acts surfaced, has had her face revealed to the public after many years of anonymity.
Known as the “Insurance Serial Giller,” Eom, a former insurance planner, orchestrated the murders and maimings of close family and associates to fraudulently claim insurance payouts. Over five years from 2000 to 2005, she was responsible for the deaths of five individuals and the blinding of another five.
While Eom In Sook’s name and her crimes were notorious in Korea, the public had never seen her face until recently. U+ Mobile TV’s program, She Killed, showcased her photo in an episode detailing her gruesome crimes, marking the first time her image was broadcast to the greater public.
The program also featured a statement from Eom’s brother, who spoke of the lengthy suffering his family experienced under Eom’s psychopathic tendencies.
In the year 2000, Eom administered antidepressants to her first husband before inflicting a concussion on him, twice, to obtain an initial insurance settlement of ₩340,000 KRW (approx. $247 USD). In that period, she proceeded to stab his eye with a clothespin, pouring hot oil on his face not long after, and later stabbing him in the stomach.
Her series of assaults disguised as self-inflicted wounds continued up until 2002, accumulating roughly ₩280 million KRW ($204,000 USD) from insurance claims.
After remarrying in 2002, she subjected her second husband to similar torments which eventually led to his death in 2003. She profited ₩38.8 million KRW (around $28,200 USD) from his passing. Her next targets were her own mother and brother whom she blinded before attempting to murder them along with another sibling by setting them on fire. They sustained severe burns, while Eom deceitfully claimed another ₩204 million KRW (about $148,000 USD) in insurance.
Later on, in 2005, she set fire to a rental property, killing her landlord and harming his family. She even tried to attack the wife again in the hospital but was thwarted and caught on security footage. Subsequently, the police apprehended her, as her brother attested to her pattern of leaving those close to her either deceased or gravely injured.
Though Eom was initially investigated without detention, her continued criminal behavior—administering drugs to unsuspecting patients, causing harm, and committing theft—led to her re-arrest in April 2005. Ultimately, the court condemned her to life imprisonment. She vainly attempted to diminish her punishment by alleging addiction issues, however, drug testing exposed her dishonesty to the judiciary.
