“The sunspot region responsible for the solar flares and coronal mass ejections has now rotated to the sun’s far side, which faces away from Earth,” Hammond added.

Most of these particles are deflected, but some get trapped by Earth’s magnetic field, propelling them towards the poles.

During a “solar minimum,” the sun’s least active phase, we might spot roughly one ejection per week. Now, at the “solar maximum,” two to three ejections occur each day on average.
Hammond points out that for an impressive display like the recent one, multiple factors need to align.
A series of ejections aimed at Earth, a substantial storm to make the auroras visible in the UK, nighttime arrival, and clear skies for visibility are all crucial elements.
“The sun has to not only eject these Coronal Mass Ejections but do so in Earth’s direction. Nonetheless, one instance does not influence the likelihood of subsequent ones,” commented Professor Mike Lockwood, head of the Royal Astronomical Society.
The sun’s roughly 27-day rotation suggests the same solar region could spark a new display at the beginning of June.
