Andy Cohen has opened up about his experiences with the guests on his show Watch What Happens Live, including an incident in which a guest unexpectedly “turned on him” during an on-air conversation.
In a candid discussion with Anderson Cooper at the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday, June 12, Cohen shared that while most of his guests have been pleasant, there have been memorable exceptions.
“There have been times where the guest has kind of turned on me or they’ve turned on each other,” Cohen revealed to Cooper, who is 57, as he reflected on his experience with a hint of humor, noting that it’s “very fascinating, from a sociological perspective.”
Cohen, 56, commented, “It’s not that fun for the host if the guest decides midway through, ‘I hate this guy,” while also recognizing that “for the viewer, it is fascinating and it generates a lot of conversation.”
“I may leave feeling bad about myself, but I know I showed the people at home a real good job,” Cohen added with a bit of self-deprecating wit.
The conversation took a turn when Cohen mentioned his encounter with Debra Winger, an interview he clearly remembers. Cohen said that during their time together on the show, Winger “had no terms of endearment” for him.

Cohen recounted asking her to order her co-stars’ on-screen kisses from most to least favored, from a list that included notable names like Robert Redford (in 1986’s Legal Eagles), Richard Gere (in 1982’s An Officer and a Gentleman), Anthony Hopkins (in 1993’s Shadowlands), among others he couldn’t quite recall.
Winger, however, did not appreciate this query. “She was like, ‘Do you remember who you kissed 40 years ago?'” Cohen shared, imitating her response with a touch of sass.
Nevertheless, Cohen, ever the comedian, leveraged the moment for a laugh, telling Cooper and the audience, “And I was like, I mean if I was kissing Redford I feel like I would remember,” prompting laughter from the audience.
While Cohen has sat down with countless high-profile celebrities, most with a good rapport, he’s acknowledged that there are always “a few” who are against the grain.
Sorry, Andy—it seems that’s just part of the job!
