GMC Unveils the All-New 2024 Sierra EV with Extended Range of 440 Miles and Innovative CrabWalk Feature

The highly anticipated 2024 GMC Sierra EV electric pickup has been detailed by GMC, confirming that the new model, initially unveiled in 2022, will grace showroom floors this summer.

Launching first is the limited-edition, top-tier 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. While this version will showcase advanced features, many of these capabilities are expected to be available in subsequent models released later.

GMC’s 2024 Sierra EV shares several characteristics with its cousin, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, which is also slated to go on sale this summer starting with a limited-edition version, the Silverado EV First-Edition RST. Notably, a version aimed at commercial customers, the Silverado EV Work Truck, has been on the market since the previous year.

The 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition debuts boasting a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that temporarily delivers an impressive 754 hp in Max Power mode, with regular performance figures yet to be revealed by GMC.

GMC has now projected increased estimates for the truck’s towing capacity and payload, which are 10,000 pounds and 1,450 pounds, respectively. These figures improve upon earlier statements by 500 pounds for towing and 150 pounds for the payload. Innovative features like the reconfigurable midgate expand the bed length to roughly 11 feet when combined with split-folding rear seats and a versatile tailgate. The standard bed comes in at 5-foot-11.

The maximum range estimate has been bumped up by 40 miles to a noteworthy 440 miles, though official EPA ratings are still pending. The vehicle’s battery is speculated to be around 205 kWh, but the automaker confirms that its 800-volt electric architecture will support rapid DC charging up to 350 kW—translating to around 10 minutes for an additional 100 miles of range.

Every model includes air suspension, allowing the vehicle to adjust its clearance by two inches. The inclusion of rear-wheel steering not only enhances maneuverability by reducing the turning radius but also introduces the impressive CrabWalk feature, common in the GMC Hummer EV models, allowing for diagonal motion.

The interior design of Sierra EV significantly differs from that of current GMC offerings and its Chevrolet counterpart, featuring an 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster and a 16.8-inch portrait-style touchscreen equipped with a volume knob and additional hard switches. Upscale amenities like a head-up display, a panoramic glass roof, and GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving technology are all standard.

The starting price of the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 has been set at $99,495, which includes a destination charge of $1,995. This is notably less than the prior announcement of $108,695. Expect more economical Sierra EV models, including the Elevation and ATV versions, to be available for the 2025 model year.

GM’s Factory Zero plant near Detroit is the production hub for the Sierra EV, along with the Hummer EV and Silverado EV. An expansion of production capacity to include GM’s Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, is anticipated for 2025.
