The planned release of Microsoft’s AI Recall functionality has been put on hold due to security issues.
This tool, capable of capturing screen images of users’ computers in short intervals, is currently under scrutiny by the Information Commissioners’ Office due to potential security implications.
A Thursday blogpost revealed that Microsoft has decided not to make the Recall feature “broadly available” starting from June 18 on Copilot+ PCs. Instead, it will be introduced to participants of the Windows Insider Programme for further testing “in the coming weeks”.
A Microsoft executive, Pavan Davuluri, expressed in the blogpost, “This decision is rooted in our commitment to ensuring a trusted, secure, and robust user experience, coupled with our intention to gather more feedback.”
The postponement follows after a cybersecurity specialist conversed with Sky News about the potential risks, referring to the feature as an easy “grab and go” haul for cybercriminals.
“Everything would be in one place with Recall, simplifying the task for criminals,” explained Muhammad Yahya Patel, a lead security engineer at Check Point, a cybersecurity agency. “It represents a simple one-stop attack approach,” added Mr. Patel.

Recall aims to facilitate users in easily tracking and remembering their digital activities using natural language, it is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) technology alongside a “photographic memory” capability.
Users, for instance, could simply search for “red lamp” after encountering one during an online session; this would prompt Recall to fetch screenshots where the red lamp appeared, directing users to the relevant webpages.
Moreover, it would scan through images, documents, presentations, and files to bring forth pertinent data on the user’s computer. It could even propose actions related to the search queries.

“If I were a hacker, I would first check the recent screenshots to get a feel for the person’s activities,” said Charlie Milton, an expert at cybersecurity firm Censornet, during a conversation with Sky News.
In light of these concerns, Microsoft has introduced additional security features, such as a “just in time” decryption tool which ensures snapshots are decrypted and accessible only upon proper user authentication.
