In a recent maneuver to impede Russia’s military operations, the United Kingdom on June 13 launched a new set of sanctions aimed at 50 Russian entities and individuals, as well as maritime vessels.

Unveiled in synchrony with the Group of Seven (G7) nations during Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s attendance at the G7 Leaders Summit in Italy, these sanctions are focussed on crippling Russia’s war-sustaining capacities, while also exhibiting the U.K.’s resolute support for Ukraine, as reported in the official British government statement.

Besides the actions of the U.K., the United States concurrently announced its own set of sanctions against Russian financial bodies. In response to the tightening U.S. sanctions, the Moscow Exchange issued a notification stating it would halt transactions in U.S. dollars and euros from June 13 onwards.

The sanctions from the U.K. include the targeting of Russia’s shadow fleet for the first time, a fleet that Russia has been using to dodge Western-imposed sanctions and continue its oil trades.

“Russia’s oil exports are (Vladimir) Putin’s chief source of income to finance the unlawful war in Ukraine. The Kremlin accrued over 8.9 trillion rubles (exceeding $100 billion approximately) or about 31% of Russia’s federal revenues in 2023 through taxation on oil production,” emphasized the statement, exposing the extent to which the illicit oil revenue supports Russia’s war efforts.

With the objective of disrupting and exacerbating the cost of Russia’s circumvention of U.K. and G7 sanctions via its shadow fleet, the June 13 sanctions were implemented.

The sanctions not only affect the maritime and financial sectors but also curtail supplies to Russia’s military, including munitions, machine tools, microelectronics, and logistics services, targeting companies located in countries such as China, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkey. Moreover, they include vessels that facilitate the shipping of military equipment from North Korea to Russia.

As per the statement, the U.K. has already sanctioned upwards of 2,000 individuals and entities under the Russia sanctions regime.

The British sanctions, as per their statement, have successively blocked Russia from accessing over $400 billion in assets and revenue since February 2022, which is tantamount to funding four more years of the invasion.

Western nations have been persistent in placing strong economic sanctions on Moscow following its outright aggression towards Ukraine. These sanctions are intended to diminish Russian state revenue and obstruct the nation from obtaining essential warfighting technologies.

Furthermore, Russia has consistently attempted to circumvent these sanctions, utilizing third-party networks situated in China, Central Asia, Turkey, the UAE, and other regions.

US issues new ‘sweeping’ sanctions against Russia — will they make a difference this time?

On June 12, the U.S. State and Treasury departments issued what they characterized as a “sweeping” series of sanctions targeted at Russia and its financial supporters, aiming to further debilitate Moscow’s wartime economy. The West continues to impose rigorous economic sanctions on Moscow in response to its military actions…
