A team of scientists has uncovered one of Europe’s most impressive migrations, which is not of birds or mammals, but of countless insects. Millions of these small creatures journey southward via a mountainous route in the Pyrenees during winter.
Employing the use of video surveillance and entomological nets, a team at the University of Exeter tracked about 17 million flies, wasps, butterflies, and dragonflies traversing through just a narrow 30-meter pass, flanked by two high peaks on the border between France and Spain, each autumn.
“Witnessing such a vast number of insects all diligently marching in one direction at the same time is certainly one of the spectacular displays nature has to offer,” commented Dr Karl Wooton, from Exeter’s Centre for Ecology and Conservation, the leading researcher of the study.
The findings suggest that this passageway sees the annual flight of billions of insects.
This legion of insects departs from their northern summer habitats, such as the UK, to find refuge in the comparatively temperate climates of southern Europe and North Africa during the harsh winters.
The Pass of Bujaruelo, standing tall at 2,278 meters, had been suspected to be a crucial insect migration route for a while now.
Some 70 years before, a pair of British birdwatchers was the first to report massive clusters of marmalade hoverflies moving through the mountain pass. These insects, recognizable by their yellow and black stripes, can venture out on astonishing 3,000km migrations each autumn, as current studies have shown.

“What we came across was seriously astounding,” stated William Hawkes from the University of Exeter, who conducted the field studies.
“The mass migration included not only significant numbers of marmalade hoverflies but numerous other insects as well.”
Remarkably, even cabbage white butterflies, notorious for invading gardens and previously not thought to be long-distance travelers, were documented, along with hummingbird hawk moths, various wasps, and a myriad of flies.
“At times, we counted over 3,000 flies in a single meter, per minute,” Hawkes added.
Though often unseen, the movement of insect “air traffic” plays a key role in ecosystem health.
Nearly 90% of the insects recorded by the scientists are pollinators. They play a significant endorsement of plant gene diversity across expansive regions.
While some insects such as the cabbage white are regarded as nuisances, others serve as natural controls against pests. For example, many hoverfly species have larval stages that are predators of aphids.
Their migrations also mean the transportation of substantial insect biomass from one region to another. They not only serve as prey for bats and birds, but when deceased, contribute as a nutrient source for additional life forms.
