“Our mobile devices were confiscated…”
Tammy Wu, known from her stint on Mnet‘s show Girls Planet 999, has shared an in-depth look into her experiences during her time on the show in a recent YouTube collaboration with creator Grazy Grace.
While discussing with Grace, Wu shed light on the type of living situation and work environment she was subjected to during her tenure on the program. Wu, the only contender who was based in the United States, flew to South Korea to participate in the six-month duration of the show. Upon arrival, she resided in dormitories with fellow contestants, a stay characterized by a strict prohibition on leaving the premise due to COVID-19 policies at the time and confiscation of everyone’s smartphones.
From May or June to like November, we only had one break in between for almost a month when we could exit the dorms, but other than that, our phones were taken and we stayed indoors.

Each trainee was granted an iPad, which came preloaded with a solitary track and video clip—the content they were expected to perform. To pass the time, they would switch the MP3s between each other’s devices for variety.
Wu also touched upon the subject of their demanding schedules while filming.
During our first stage, the strain was palpable, but because the shooting stretched on for so long, by the time I hit the stage, my nerves had been replaced with sheer fatigue.

She recounted that the film shoots would extend beyond 30 continuous hours with only brief intermissions for meals. While the dormitory meal options were varied, the food on set was limited to boxed lunches. Remaining seated for prolonged periods was a necessity, and Wu recounted instances of participants collapsing from their seats in sheer tiredness.
It was intense. A full 36 hours with my contact lenses still in.
