A comparison with 2023 data from UKHSA shows 858 reported whooping cough incidents for the entire year.

Previously, official statements revealed five infant deaths in England associated with the infection.

Dr Michael Head, a global health research fellow at the University of Southampton, specified that the statistics “highlight the gravity of whooping cough – it is indeed a life-threatening condition for infants.”

He noted that aside from being extremely contagious, akin to measles, whooping cough also surpasses COVID-19 in terms of infectiousness. It is often referred to as the “100-day cough” due to the extended recovery period and spreads quite effortlessly.
