A breakthrough in artificial intelligence (AI) technology is set to analyze every bite you take to determine the caloric value of your meals.
Researchers in Canada are at the forefront, developing a system that evaluates video recordings of your eating process to ascertain the nutritional content of your meal.
“The existing […] algorithms for estimating food portions usually require the user to capture images of their food once or twice,” explain the researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada.
“[This] can be cumbersome and often fails to include food elements that are hidden from a top-down view, like ingredients that are part of a soup.”
This new AI system observes each spoonful as it travels toward your mouth, offering a more accurate measurement than some existing dietary AI trackers, the researchers claim.
The AI’s accuracy in gauging the volume of consumed food boasts a low 4.4% error margin.
Presently, while the system cannot specifically identify the type of food on the spoon, it is being trained to recognize various food items—including those it has never encountered previously.
“The move is towards employing massive language models like ChatGPT […] to discern the food contents or to ask simple queries [such as] ‘is this chicken?’,” mentioned Yuhao Chen from the University of Waterloo in Canada in a New Scientist discussion.
“Often, especially when people are eating at home, the meal isn’t necessarily a known dish. It might just be a mix of whatever items they find in the fridge,” he added.
The system is versatile, compatible with not only spoons but also forks and chopsticks.
With issues like obesity and malnutrition on the rise, new dietary technologies are being introduced with the aim of promoting better health.
