New 2025 VW Golf GTI Clubsport Unveiled with Impressive 296 Horsepower

In the setting of the legendary 24 Hours of Nürburgring race, Volkswagen introduced the world to the latest Golf GTI Clubsport iteration. This edition enhances the iconic hatchback to new heights of performance.

This special variant is designed on the platform of the forthcoming 2025 Golf GTI, which will make its way to US dealers later this year. Under the hood sits a potent 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that has been tweaked to produce a staggering 296 horsepower. In stark contrast, the current GTI delivers 241 horsepower, whereas the refreshed 2025 model for Europe is listed at 262 horsepower. Details for the American version will be revealed as the launch date nears.

As is traditional with the GTI lineup, the Clubsport directs power exclusively to the front wheels. This is accomplished via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission coupled with an electronic differential lock. Performance figures for the GTI Clubsport do not disappoint with a sprint from 0 to 62 mph clocking in at 5.6 seconds, and its velocity maxes out at 155 mph—a limit that can be extended to 166 mph with the optional Race package, the detailed contents of which remain unspecified by VW.

Looking to escalate the Clubsport’s track prowess, VW equips the car with the DCC drive mode selector, featuring a setting fine-tuned exclusively for mastering the challenging Nürburgring circuit. This specific mode adjusts elements such as suspension and steering for optimal performance on the renowned track.

The Clubsport edition stands apart from its GTI siblings with a refreshed front-end design and an illuminated VW emblem—another first. The lighting elements at the front and back have also received updates. VW has crafted a new 19-inch wheel design for this model, drawing inspiration from the hallmark Detroit-style wheels linked with the GTI. There’s even an option for 19-inch forged wheels, each weighing a mere 17 pounds, to improve vehicle dynamics by minimizing unsprung weight.

The debut of the prior Golf GTI Clubsport was in 2021, commemorating the 45th anniversary since the original GTI’s debut in 1976. The current incarnation honors the Golf’s 50 years of heritage.

Unfortunately, like the last edition, there are no plans for the Clubsport to be sold in the US. American enthusiasts desiring greater capability than the standard 2025 update can anticipate an upcoming refreshed Golf R, set to arrive in the summer and expected in the US for the 2025 model year.

The Nürburgring 24 Hours also served as the debut race for VW’s GTI Clubsport 24h, a race-spec car boasting 343 horsepower thanks to the E20 ethanolic fuel by Shell. Piloted by Max Kruse Racing, the vehicle excelled in its class despite a race hindered by fog, leading to a 14-hour pause and an early conclusion.
