UK clinicians have embarked on what is being hailed as a “landmark moment” in cancer treatment, with the first patient receiving a personalised cancer vaccine designed to prevent cancer recurrence post-surgery.
Elliot Pfebve, a patient who underwent surgery for bowel cancer, has received this groundbreaking treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham after a sizable tumour was removed from his colon.

At 55 years old and a father of four, Mr. Pfebve, who found out about his illness during a routine medical check-up, is now a participant in an innovative clinical trial.

“I hope my involvement in this trial can pave the way for a brighter future for those affected by cancer,” he added.
Elliot Pfebve marks the first of potentially thousands of NHS patients across England who will be offered the chance to participate in these trials for different types of cancer in the forthcoming years as part of a groundbreaking initiative, officials have said.

This pioneering vaccine aims to activate a patient’s immune system after tumour-removing surgery to identify and eliminate any residual cancer cells.
Dr. Victoria Kunene, consulting oncologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and lead investigator for the study, shares optimism about the potential for this treatment to significantly enhance patient outcomes.
However, she cautions, “although hopes are high, it remains premature to declare the trial a success at this stage.”The Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad initiative by NHS England is the framework within which Mr.
Elliot’s trial is conducted. Over 30 hospital trusts are poised to join the program, potentially encompassing other cancer variants like pancreatic and lung cancers.
