The Shiba Inu known as Kabosu, who became an internet sensation as the face of the ‘doge’ meme, has passed away at 18, leaving behind a legacy of joy and memes.

In a heartfelt message, Atsuko Sato, Kabosu’s owner, announced on Instagram: “In the morning of the 24th of May, Kabosu crossed the rainbow bridge. Your support for many years has been greatly appreciated,” she said.
“She left us in a very calm way, just like falling asleep while I was still caressing her with warm hands.
“Her happiness has touched us all, and knowing how much she was loved makes me believe she was probably the happiest dog in the world, which makes me the most fortunate owner.”
Ms. Sato, who works as a schoolteacher, welcomed Kabosu into her family in 2008 after rescuing her from a shelter that was once a puppy mill.
An image of Kabosu from 2010 went viral on platforms such as Reddit and Tumblr, featuring her iconic crossed paws and knowing smile.
The name “Doge” traces back to an idiosyncratic spelling from a 2005 Homestar Runner episode, used by a Reddit user to refer to the endearing image.
